Train trip through Alps from Venice, Italy to Zurich, Switzerland

Sunday 17 May
Caught fast train from Venice Mestre to Milan, which took 2 1/2 hours. Very clean & comfortable, & lovely to see the beautiful Italian countryside. Milano train station is impressive & could be mistaken for a cathedral!

Checked in to Mercure Hotel & caught tram to Cathedral Duomo. Unfortunately, we weren't dressed appropriately so had to go back to the hotel to change!
The building is huge & the architecture absolutely amazing with all the marble statues, both inside & out.
The photo does not do justice to the majesty of the cathedral.

We had dinner on the way home, then literally the world's best ice cream!

Monday
Caught taxi from hotel to Milano Central Station in time to catch the train to Tirano which is the border town between Italy & Switzerland. Train went past Lake Como which was a massive lake & very beautiful.

Shared a nice pub lunch & last Italian ice cream before boarding the amazing Bernina Express train to Chur through the Swiss Alps.
The train climbs from 429m to 2253m and goes through 55 tunnels & over 196 bridges/viaducts on the 122km track.
Photos do not do justice to the most beautiful scenery & stunning train journey we have ever done before.
Small lake near the summit before we started to descend. Now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Relaxing & enjoying the scenery with a Peroni beer.
Lots of flowing rivers & drop offs from the melting snow.

Beautiful view on board of the Bernina Express through the Switzerland mountains from Tirano ...

Quick change of trains at Chur to Zurich & then to Zug where we were met by Ruth (daughter of Jane's Godfather), Iwan & Juan.
