Paris with Ian & Sharon

Wednesday 27 May
TGV train from Lausanne to Paris

Met Ian & Sharon at the Hotel Pavillon Opera at 5 pm, after catching a taxi from Gare de Lyons.
Went for a walk along the Seine River & travelled on the Metro underground (€1.80 per person each trip, no matter how far). Saw Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower & other iconic Parisienne landmarks by night.
Outside the Louvre

Thursday
After an excellent continental breakfast at the hotel, we caught the Metro to Roland Garros to watch the French Open. First watched Isner & Sock from USA on a practice court. Then watched Tomic lose to Kokinnakis in an all Oz round 2 match. Then we caught the end of Bryan/Mattek-Sands beating Mirnyi/Bouchard in mixed doubles. Final game was Paes/Hingis, who still has class. An awesome experience & a dream come true.

Friday
Caught Hop on Hop off bus to the main tourist attractions in Paris. The combo ticket included a great boat ride along the River Seine, which gave yet another perspective on this beautiful city. We went into Notre Dame Cathedral, which was absolutely awe-inspiring, & climbed the Eiffel Tower (too many steps to count, but worth it for the view!).
Arc de triomph where the traffic was chaotic.
A Roland Garros tennis ball hanging from the Eiffel Tower.

Dinner at Ian's choice, the Hard Rock Cafe with Rachael, a former student of Jane's.

Special thanks to Ian & Sharon for taking the time to meet us in Paris & making it a very memorable time that was not long enough!

Buchrain & Villars, Switzerland

Tuesday 19 May
After breakfast with Ruth in Buchrain, we spent the day with Jane's godfather, Albert, & his wife, Anna.
Same photo taken 32 years ago in 1983

The older son, Peter, took us all out for lunch at a typical Swiss pub just up the road, then we went for a walk in the Swiss countryside (unfortunately in the rain, but we still got the sights & smells). We had a lovely evening with the family.

Wednesday
Drove to Lucerne, the nearest city, to play Foxtrail which was like a "treasure hunt". It's a brilliant way of exploring a town because they send you, through the clues, to all the key tourist attractions, like museums, bridges etc, & the ticket includes entry fees & local public transport necessary to get to the attractions.
We had another lovely traditional Swiss dinner & a "tip top" evening with the family, which included several schnapps & "Chernobyls".

Thursday
Went for a run in the rain in the nearby forest on one of the many trails. Ian & Margaret drove up & we all had lunch at Albert's favourite local pub. Ian & Margaret then took us back to their lovely chalet in the ski resort of Villars.
Adlers Pub in Buchrain for farewell lunch.

Friday
Went to a wonderful chalet style restaurant made of wood in Chatel in France for an amazing fondue lunch.
Jane's attempt at a panoramic photo.
Photo taken by Ian in Chatel, France.

When we got back, we relaxed in the steam room & swam in the indoor pool. We eventually figured out how to use the laundry machines, but fifty socks were still wet!

Saturday
Hired a MTB & caught train up to Bretaye with Jane & Ian. It took 20 minutes to get to the top.

Jane & Ian walked down the mountain while I was supposed to follow a trail that would take about 3 hours. Unfortunately, with it being so early in the season, the MTB trail signs had not yet been put up, so I could not find Ensex & ended up going straight down the mountain over some very muddy sections where the snow had recently melted. I tried to negotiate 2 consecutive ramps but my front wheel dug into the mud between the ramps & I carried on over the handle bars.
Bike & back were okay but legs took quite a knock. Despite the wipeout, I was back down to Villars within the hour, so caught the next train up. This time I managed to follow some other riders & found Ensex, which was a relief! After stopping at a pub in Taveyanne, I had a good 3 hour ride down the mountain via La Barboleuse.
After the ride, we had a sauna & a swim in the indoor pool, then In the evening we had a very enjoyable & entertaining game of tenpin bowling with Ian & Margaret.

Sunday
View from the Sargeants'timeshare in Villars.
We went to Ouchy on the shores of Lake Geneva & walked around.
Going into the museum, you go under the high jump bar set at the record's height (2.45m).
We then went to Gruyere for a tasty charbonnade (hot rock) with very tender steak.
A group was playing Alpine horns & flag throwing in the town centre, which was a real treat.
Gruyere is a beautiful Medieval town with cobblestones and an impressive castle.
We visited the Nestle Chocolate Factory for dessert, then came back on the magnificent scenic route over Les Diablerets.

Monday
Went for a drive right around Lake Geneva to Lake Annecy in France for lunch & a very scenic boat ride around the lake.
Lunch at a restaurant on one of the canals in Annecy
Boat ride on Lake Annecy

Tuesday
Went to Montreaux & had a lovely walk along the lake front, then went to Grandvaux, where we had a great lunch at a Thai restaurant (Singha beer again!!!) with the most magnificent view imaginable.
Great panoramic photo taken by Ian with 270 degree view.
The walk to the top of Les Pleiades took us through gorgeous fields of narcissus.
Hot chocolate with Ian & Margaret at the top of Les Pleiades with another spectacular view of Lake Geneva.

Our last dinner at Villars (sadly!!!) was delicious Swiss raclette.

Wednesday
Drive to Lausanne to catch the TGV to Paris.

Special thanks to Ian & Margaret Sargeant and the Rechsteiners for their wonderful & generous hospitality.

Train trip through Alps from Venice, Italy to Zurich, Switzerland

Sunday 17 May
Caught fast train from Venice Mestre to Milan, which took 2 1/2 hours. Very clean & comfortable, & lovely to see the beautiful Italian countryside. Milano train station is impressive & could be mistaken for a cathedral!

Checked in to Mercure Hotel & caught tram to Cathedral Duomo. Unfortunately, we weren't dressed appropriately so had to go back to the hotel to change!
The building is huge & the architecture absolutely amazing with all the marble statues, both inside & out.
The photo does not do justice to the majesty of the cathedral.

We had dinner on the way home, then literally the world's best ice cream!

Monday
Caught taxi from hotel to Milano Central Station in time to catch the train to Tirano which is the border town between Italy & Switzerland. Train went past Lake Como which was a massive lake & very beautiful.

Shared a nice pub lunch & last Italian ice cream before boarding the amazing Bernina Express train to Chur through the Swiss Alps.
The train climbs from 429m to 2253m and goes through 55 tunnels & over 196 bridges/viaducts on the 122km track.
Photos do not do justice to the most beautiful scenery & stunning train journey we have ever done before.
Small lake near the summit before we started to descend. Now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Relaxing & enjoying the scenery with a Peroni beer.
Lots of flowing rivers & drop offs from the melting snow.

Mediterranean Cruise (Croatia, Greek Islands & Italy)

European map

Friday 8 May

Arrived at Hotel Cris in Mestre, Venice, early afternoon. Caught bus to Venice Island & then water bus to San Marco & Rialto. Incredibly beautiful (not at all dirty or smelly as I had been led to believe), & San Marco all gold! Quite surreal to wander round the Rialto.
St Mark's Square
Both the buses & water buses were full.
Went to Italian restaurant for dinner but did not meet up to expectations.

Saturday
Caught taxi to docks which was about 5 km away & cost €40 despite sharing with some Canadians.
Very easy boarding of MSC Lirica around midday. Ship impressive - lovely spacious cabin & tasteful decor throughout. Not as many on-board activities as we have been used to, but great food & a good show in the evening.

Sunday
Landed in Split, Croatia, at 8 am & departed at 6 pm. It is very beautiful, & very old (4th century, yet lots still standing & even inhabited!) Climbed the Bell Tower so had a great view of the whole area. After exploring the palace, we went on a bus to see the nearby countryside & beaches. One of the nearby islands produces beautiful white marble (which the White House is made from).

Diocletian Palace with Bell Tower in the background.
View from the Diocletian Bell Tower
Trying out the local beer called Ozujsko which also comes in draft & tastes better. Both €3 each.

Monday
Day at sea en route to Santorini.
Jane won €300 playing bingo. Clocks put forward by an hour which meant we were late for Captain's cocktail party & missed the formal dinner. Outstanding show which managed to avoid all language problems with seemless choreography. Great gymnastics, juggling, strength & balance, with a little singing & dancing for variety.

Tuesday
Santorini by day (8am-3 pm) & Mykonos by night (8 pm-3 am).
At Santorini we had a choice between going up the mountain by cable car or donkey. Both cost €5.
We opted for cable car as advised by cruise director but I walked back down on the cobblestone/donkey path. The stepped cobbled path was hard on the donkeys & full of donkey shit so smelly for the tourist. The weather was a bit overcast but Santorini is very quaint, though expensive according to the BPI (Beer Price Index) where the local beer at €8 was almost double the price onboard our ship. No wonder Greece is struggling in the EU!
Jane went gambling in the casino & lost some of her winnings.
Photos of Santorini looking down from the main town, Fira.
The selfie stick that Jane banned is getting some good use!
Our MSC ship is the one on the left.

All the buildings & the main town are on top of the mountain.

Arrived at Mykonos after passing by ? Islands. Caught the water bus (€2) from ship to the old port of Mykonos. Had fun exploring the narrow alleyways & touristy shops at night which brought back fond memories of our last visit 2 years ago. We found a pub with wifi & Mythos draft beer.

Wednesday
Day at sea. 600 nautical miles from Mykonos to Dubrovnik at an average speed of 30 knots compared to about 5 knots sailing the yacht. No luck at bingo today! Played Rummikub & enjoyed a relaxing day on board. Had lunch with a lovely old Austrian couple.
Announcements throughout the cruise in 5 official languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish & German) a bit frustrating & lengthy.

Thursday
In the morning Jane went to bingo to give back more of her winnings while I went to gym, which is getting busier each time as passengers start to battle the bulge. I was riding the bicycle as we came into Dubrovnik at midday. We caught a local bus from the new port to the old town, which was absolutely amazing. We walked around the old city's walls, & were blown away by the spectacular views. The combination of dramatic scenery, fabulous old buildings, quaint cobbled streets with great restaurants, & the history of the place made Dubrovnik our favourite stop yet.
Photos taken from outer wall which cost 100 Kuna ($18) each to go up & around.
Back on board the ship with the new city in the background.

There was another gala night tonight (luckily, as we managed to largely miss the 1st one), with the best dinner yet, & a fun procession by the waiters, all carrying flaming baked alaskas.

Friday
Arrived in Ancona, Italy, around midday & spent the afternoon exploring the city. It was a bit of a let down after Dubrovnik, but had some Roman ruins from around 200BC & some impressive churches. The ugly port rather dominated the city.

Saturday
Cruise ended back in Venice. Disembarked around 11am & caught people mover & bus to Hotel Vienna near Venice Mestre train station, arriving midday.
Caught bus & water bus to Murano to watch the glass blowing before returning to Piazza San Marco. I went to the Doge's Palace, while Paul explored, tried some beers & bought a hat! The Doge's Palace is quite the most impressive place I have ever seen! The artwork throughout is absolutely stunning, but most impressive is the fact that law, government, the prison system, in fact civil life as we know it (including censorship!), seems to have developed there. The route is very cleverly done, as you go from the "law courts" down the Bridge of Sighs to the prison cells, just as the prisoners would have done, & the contrast is phenomenal!
We then went to the Rialto for dinner & had the best lasagna & pizza ever!
Panoramic view coming into Venice from the gym on Deck 11 at the front of the ship.
Murano Island, Venice, after the glass blowing demonstration.
